SPECIAL LECTURE 02 · FIELD REPORT

UWAJIMA MEDIA LAB

English Summary|

On October 3, 2026, Uwajima Media Lab held its second special lecture, a tsunami evacuation walk led by Takahisa Oomoto of Ehime University. Starting from our activity space in the Ebisu-machi shopping arcade, participants explored central Uwajima and considered earthquake and tsunami preparedness.

The walk drew attention to changes in ground level, the proximity of the sea and rivers, potential obstacles along evacuation routes, and the clarity of evacuation signs. It also raised an important question: can someone unfamiliar with the area understand where to go? Oomoto discussed three stages of disaster preparedness and recovery: protecting lives, managing daily life after evacuation, and rebuilding homes and livelihoods.

This report provides an overview. Materials from all three special lectures—covering local history and culture, disaster preparedness, community branding, and communication—will guide the Media Lab’s work in the next academic year and beyond.

Students joining the program will choose topics that interest them, research local sources, conduct interviews, and create articles. Their findings, research records, and unanswered questions will be passed on to future participants, allowing each group to continue and expand the work.

We welcome students interested in exploring their community, along with individuals and organizations willing to support these activities through sponsorship, donations, interviews, or research assistance.
