| 7- Overview |
First, we looked back on the first and second sessions and explained to the visitors what had happened so far. The first speaker was Mr. Matsuura from the Nanyo Area Association for the Visually Impaired, who talked about how to interact with and respond to people with disabilities in normal times, as well as his experience during the heavy rains of July 2018. The video made me feel the urgency of the time. He talked about how difficult it was for him to not have assistance with bathing because he was visually impaired, and how it was really scary to be in a world where there was only sound and he didn't know what was going on. The second speaker was Mr. Utsunomiya, manager of the multi-functional support center Friend of the Uwajima Welfare Association, who spoke about his experience as a facility manager dealing with the disaster for people with disabilities. He responded quickly and was able to open the center early, which I felt was a real relief for the users. After that, the students were divided into eight groups and did group work, discussing what they could do through the experiences of people with disabilities. Through this, they realized that it is important to get to know people with disabilities through their daily interactions. In a follow-up survey, many people said they would like to participate in such a meeting again, and some said they felt it was important to value local cooperation and make preparations on a regular basis, rather than thinking about solving problems after a disaster has occurred. It was a time when we were able to listen intently to and discuss difficult issues. |
