[Activity Report] Heavy Machinery Training “Usable” at Disaster Sites Conducted

― Uwajima Work-Type Disaster Support Team Training Project ―

Introduction

The Uwajima NPO Center conducted heavy machinery training aimed at developing personnel who can respond immediately within the community during disasters. This training was not merely for acquiring certifications, but a practical course to acquire operational skills and safety principles that are actually useful at disaster sites.

🌍 Read in English
Uwajima NPO Center organized a practical heavy machinery training program aimed at preparing local residents for disaster response. The training focuses not only on certification but on learning real operational skills and safety awareness required in emergency situations.

Why "Field-Specific"?

This training emphasizes acquiring the ability to actually operate at disaster sites rather than just obtaining qualifications. We conducted training assuming environments close to actual sites, such as narrow spaces, uneven terrain, and situations with collapsed structures.

🌍 Read in English
Unlike typical training focused on certification tests, this program emphasizes real disaster response skills. Participants practiced operating machinery in narrow spaces and unstable environments similar to actual disaster sites.

Safety Philosophy is Top Priority

"My operation has the potential to injure people."

Heavy machinery is a convenient tool, but misjudgment can lead to serious accidents. Therefore, the training emphasized thorough basic operations such as safety checks and deciding when to stop operations.

🌍 Read in English
Safety is the most important principle when operating heavy machinery. Operators must always remember that a single mistake can cause serious injury. Participants were trained to maintain awareness of their surroundings and stop operating immediately if they feel uncertain.

Basic Operation and Center of Gravity Management

In addition to the basic operations of the boom, arm, and bucket, managing the center of gravity was explained as a particularly important point. Since the risk of tipping increases when rotating with the arm extended, it is necessary to bring the center of gravity closer before rotating.

🌍 Read in English
Basic machine operations such as boom, arm, and bucket movement were practiced. Special attention was given to center-of-gravity control. Rotating the machine while the arm is fully extended increases the risk of tipping.

Turning in Narrow Spaces

Assuming situations such as having a wall behind, we practiced turning using the differential operation of the tracks. The ability to work safely in narrow spaces is important at disaster sites.

🌍 Read in English
Participants practiced turning the machine in tight spaces using differential track movement. This skill is essential when operating near obstacles or collapsed structures.

Operating the Demolition Attachment (Grapple)

We also practiced operating a grapple attachment for demolition work. Since work efficiency varies greatly depending on the gripping angle and arm posture, we learned practical operating methods.

🌍 Read in English
The training also included the use of demolition grapples. Although the opening and closing motion is simple, the angle and position of the arm are critical for successfully gripping objects.

Basics of Getting On and Off

For safety, when getting off heavy machinery, it was recommended to get off facing the machine, stepping down backward, rather than jumping off forward.

🌍 Read in English
Safe mounting and dismounting procedures were also emphasized. Operators should face the machine and carefully step down rather than jumping from the front, reducing the risk of accidental lever activation.

Uwajima Work-Type Disaster Support Team

The Uwajima NPO Center aims to form the "Uwajima Work-Type Disaster Support Team," which will handle heavy machinery operations. The concept is to increase the number of people with practical skills in the region and strengthen the initial response system in the event of a disaster.

🌍 Read in English
This training is part of the effort to build the “Uwajima Work-Type Disaster Response Team.” The goal is to increase the number of locally trained operators who can help with debris removal and recovery work after disasters.
