Goals of the Activity
To help children learn about disaster preparedness in a fun way and understand how to prepare for emergencies using everyday items.
Day's Events
This day was Yoshida Elementary School's observation day for parents. We introduced the contents of an emergency kit and items to keep in a disaster preparedness bottle to 2nd and 3rd graders and their guardians.
Some children had emergency kits but didn't know what was inside, so we explained that they should check the contents and put in what they need. We also recommended that instead of trying emergency food for the first time during a disaster, they should eat items nearing their expiration date as a practice.
For the disaster preparedness bottle, we showed items that could be bought at 100-yen shops, and at the end, a disaster prevention specialist advised adding ramune (fizzy candy)!
There was also a cute question: "How many ramune should I put in?"
Participant Feedback/Impressions
Children who found disaster preparedness difficult seemed to experience "disaster preparedness = daily preparations" as if it were a game.
